European Broadcasting Union (EBU)

The European Broadcasting Union was firstly established on the 12th February 1950. It was created by twenty-three broadcasting organizations from Europe on an annual meeting in England.

Since now the EBU has a list of seventy-five members from countries all around Europe and forty-three associates also. These members are usually broadcasters owned from the government or private channels with public mission.

Nowadays the EBU members are broadcasters not only from Europe but from Canada, Japan, India, Mexico and many others. But the so called ‘active members’ are broadcasters from countries members of the Council of Europe.

The most popular production of the European Broadcasting Union is the Eurovision song contest. It is annually organized and produced by EBU. Being a member of EBU you can easily take part in this contest. The Eurovision network annually organizes some other contests such as Eurovision Young Dancers and the Junior Eurovision Song contest.

Most of the EBU members have the rights to broadcast the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup too.

Some of the countries members in the European Broadcasting Union have organized on several children’s programmes anddocumentaries too. Some of them are The Animals of Farthing Wood from 1993 and Noah’s Island from 1997. You must have watched the Vienna New Year’s Concert – this is another production of EBU too.
