The history of Eurovision

The first Eurovision contest was held on 24th May 1956, where the participants were only from seven countries. The European Song Contest is based on the Italian Sanremo Music Festival. The first host of the contest was Lugano, Switzerland, where the winner was Lys Assia with the song ‘Refrain’.

In the beginning, the songs had to be sung in the participants’ native language, but then in 1965 after the song ‘Absent Friend’ was presented in English the European Broadcasting Union gave the opportunity to all of the participants from then on to sing their songs in English. Afterward The European Broadcasting union set very strict rules, in which it is said that the song has to be written only in English or the native language.

Eurovision 2008

For the 53rd time the most interesting song contest, ‘Eurovision’, will be held in Serbia. This year it will be in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, because the winner from last year’s contest was the Serbian song – Molitva.

Last year the song ‘Molitva ’ was presented by the Serbian singer Marija Serifovic. Afterwards this song is recorded in several different languages – English, Finnish and Russian.

Having won the first place Marija Serifovic gained the opportunity Eurovision 2008 contest to be held in Belgrade. The contest will be held in Belgrade Arena, which is one of the largest hall in Europe. This hall has about twenty thousand seats, that hopefully will be enough to gather together the audience for the entire show.

Eurovision Song Contest 2008

The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual contest organised by the state run TV stations of European nations to find the best new popular song.

The competition is restricted to members of the EBU - hence the presence of Israel and other countries not generally found on a map of Europe. And because there are more countries than slots available at the song contest, there’s an elimination procedure, based around how well you’ve done over the last few years. Unless you happen to be one of the EBU’s big four contributors - the UK, Germany, France, and Spain - in which case, you qualify automatically.

Eurovision is the name given to a network of communication channels - founded in the 1950s - that links state TV stations across Europe. The system minimizes the cost to each member of transmitting pan-European news and sports footage. In an effort to scare up programming to justify the network, members thought up the Song Contest and the first was held in Switzerland in 1956.
